When an inmate is released from prison, he is faced with many challenges. Most need help finding meaningful employment with decent pay, upgrading of skills, and finances to tide them through the initial period of re-integration into society. More intangibly, and even more important, these men and women need to develop healthy friendships, find a listening and sympathetic ear (or for some, counselling), and support and encouragement to continue their transformation. PFS Aftercare provides the following services:
Prison gate Ministry Upon release, the prisoner is met by a PFS Aftercare staff or volunteer. Where his/her family members are present, a FLM staff or volunteer will accompany the Aftercare staff to welcome the recently released inmate. The released inmate is then taken for a welcome meal, and briefed as to the types of help available to him/her. Depending on the released prisoner’s needs, Aftercare staff will provide necessary follow-up.
The drop-in Centre situated in 56 Geylang Lorong 23 Century Technology Building #04-00 Singapore 388381 provides a comfortable setting for released prisoners to rest in, borrow books from a library carrying hundreds of titles, watch wholesome DVD’s covering a range of subjects, make telephone calls to prospective employers, receive counselling, or simply find a sympathetic ear.
Employment Assistance PFS Aftercare helps released prisoners find employment at fair wages. They are also assisted in preparing for job interviews. Upon employment, PFS Aftercare staff visit them at their workplace and collaborate with employers to help the men and women adjust to the work environment. Where a released prisoner is unable to secure a job for more than 3 months, PFS tries to assign them temporary work within PFS, or in other charitable organizations at a stipend of $600. We appeal to employers to consider employing released prisoners. If you have a job opening, please call Mr Anson Yoo at 3106 2106, or email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Financial Assistance PFS Aftercare helps released prisoners with immediate needs such as clothes, easi-link card top-ups, and food hampers. Where it is verified that the inmate has no financial means at all, PFS gives financial assistance to a maximum of $300 @ month for up to 3 months.
Vocational Training and Academic Tuition Presently, PFS provides training in computer skills and language proficiency. Where the need arises, PFS also helps equip released prisoners with skills for job applications and interviews. Staff and volunteers provide tuition for released prisoners sitting for their 'N', 'O' and 'A' level exams.
Aftercare Support Groups and Fellowship Meetings To help released prisoners forge healthy friendships, PFS Aftercare holds weekly fellowship meetings on Saturdays. Meetings begin with a catered dinner, followed by worship, an inspirational talk, and break-up time for participants to reflect on what they have learned, as well as share about the joys and struggles that they experienced during the week. On weekdays, PFS Aftercare conducts support group meetings. Participants are encouraged to reflect on and share about their daily challenges as well as more deep-seated problems. The group then provides mutual encouragement and prayer. Presently, support group meetings are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. PFS Aftercare hopes to have support group meetings from Mondays to Fridays to enable released inmates to find support groups throughout the week. Volunteers from various churches facilitate the support group and fellowship meetings. This also gives released prisoners the opportunity to discover more about various churches, and if they choose to do so, to follow the volunteer to church. |
